A SERVICE to commemorate 74 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe will take place in Northwich at the weekend.
The Northwich branch of the Royal British Legion will be holding a service at 2.15pm on Sunday, May 12, at the war memorial in Church Road, Northwich.
Both Northwich Town Council and the RBL will lay wreaths at the foot of the memorial to commemorate the end of the war in Europe in 1945.
VE Day – Victory in Europe Day – itself falls on Wednesday, May 8, 74 years to the day since allied forces formally accepted the surrender of Nazi Germany in Berlin.
This still was not the end of the war, as fighting continued against the Japanese until August of that year – although the German surrender sparked huge celebrations across Europe.
Terry Gamble, from the Northwich branch of the RBL, said: “Anyone who would like to join us on this momentous day will be most welcome.”
