ERNIE Welch, landlord of The Old Star in Winsford, gave an illustrated talk on his epic cycle ride from Winsford to Roscommon, County Mayo, recently.
On reaching the age of 60, Ernie decided to think seriously about his health and take more exercise, so he took up cycling.
He rode around the local lanes, a few miles each day, gradually increasing the miles. Over two years his fitness levels rose and so did his enthusiasm, which led him to plan a 305-mile sponsored trip to Ireland.
Encouraged by family and friends, Ernie and his back-up team of fellow cyclists began regular training sessions, and at the end of April 2014 they set off, cheered on by those who had turned out to see them.
Ernie and his team raised £17,000 for St Luke’s Hospice, Winsford, and Roscommon Hospice, County Mayo.
In addition to this incredible achievement, McCoy’s crisps awarded The Old Star the title of “Best pub in the country”. Ernie’s reward was a trip to the World Cup in Brazil, where a local bar was transformed into a replica of his pub.
Ernie was treated like royalty and, much to his amusement, referred to as Mr McCoy. It was a well-earned reward for all the hard work Ernie has put into his cycling and his business. He is already planning another trip around the coast of Ireland.
The next meeting is on Wednesday, October 15. For further information please ring 01606 592724 or 01606 594970.
