THE Council have axed plans to create a permanent site for Travelling Showpeople in Winsford.
Cheshire West and Chester Council have confirmed that they will not proceed with a scheme to create ten pitches at the Bostock Road entrance of Road One.
The plans were fiercely opposed by local businesses operating from the Winsford Industrial Estate – who believed the land needed safeguarding for future industrial expansion.
A spokesman for Cheshire West and Chester Council said: “The council is no longer proceeding with plans to develop a Travelling Showperson site on land off Road One due to the high demand from expanding businesses and job creation.
“The council is continuing to identify possible areas of land within Cheshire West to develop sites for Showepersons, Gipsies and Travellers.”
Winsford Swanlow and Dene councillor, Stephen Burns, said: “I joined forces some time ago with the Winsford 1-5 Business Group in objecting to this potential application.
“The overwhelming feeling was that business zones should be for business and not for residential use.
“There should be suitable Travelling Showperson sites available but not within business zones. I could never understand why anyone would want to live on an industrial estate anyway.”
