DIARY events include a trip to Dunham Massey on October 6 to visit the First World War exhibition.
A provisional booking to visit Roberts Bakery in the new year has been made, and a visit to Anglesey during 2015 is also planned.
Pam announced that the recent car boot sale, despite the wet bank holiday weather, raised nearly £100 and thanked everyone who helped.
She then introduced the speaker, Irene Cunliffe. Irene’s topic was “What did you do in the war, Mum?” and gave an amusing account of her early life as an evacuee during the Second World War.
Irene, aged six, left Salford railway station for Lancashire with her friend who encouraged her to go on an “exciting adventure”. The reality, however, was something quite different and by the Christmas of that year she asked her mum to take her back home.
Life in Salford with her family became increasingly difficult as both Liverpool and Manchester were being bombed continually and eventually she was evacuated again, but was taken in by a “well to do” family, and together with her parents and siblings it became a lifelong friendship.
The next meeting is on October 1 when speaker George Hughes will be talking about Grenadier Guards and Royal Palaces.
