IN August the Winsford Midweek Club celebrated its 40th anniversary by holding a buffet with a celebration cake plus entertainment provided by magician Pete Turner.
Chairman Carole Fowles welcomed everyone, making special reference to those original members who were unable to attend, in particular Doreen Maddison, a former chairman, who is unwell.
She then introduced those who were able to come along, with special reference to founder member Penny Gardiner. It was Penny’s enthusiasm 40 years ago that initiated the beginnings of the club.
At that time the Family Circle magazine was encouraging family circle clubs to start up.
Meetings were initially held in friends’ and neighbours’ homes and although it took a while to get going, Penny and Judith Kittle, the first official member, were soon holding regular meetings.
Eventually, as the group grew in numbers, the need to find an alternative meeting place became important and so the midweek club was born.
It soon became a popular place, boasting over 70 members at one time.
Over the years members have come and gone, venues for holding meetings have changed, but the spirit of the club has remained the same, aiming to create a friendly atmosphere where people can enjoy a chat, listen to diverse and interesting speakers and join in social activities. The evening was a great success.
The next meeting will be today, Wednesday, at the United Reformed Church, Winsford. For more information please ring 01606 592724 or 01606 594970.
