Villagers are urged to support flower and produce show

Barnton Memorial Hall plays host to Barnton Flower and Produce Show, an event organisers believe is the first of its kind in the village for at least 30 years.

The show will feature eight categories, with judging taking place between 1pm and 3pm.

The categories are fruit, vegetables, flowers, baking, jams/preserves, needlework, photography and art, and there are 10 categories in each of the categories.

To enter any of the classes people are asked to bring their entries between 10am and 1pm on Saturday, and no entries will be accepted after 1pm.

There are also children’s classes covering three age groups, and the prize-giving at 3pm will include a Best in Show shield donated by F Hayes funeral directors of Barnton.

“We would be delighted to see old photos or records of village life from past years to add to a display for future generations,” said parish councillor and genealogist Sheena Beech, one of the organisers.

“Any surplus garden produce, knitting wools and craft supplies anyone wishes to donate will be sold in aid of our local food bank to help vulnerable families and individuals in need.

“An important part of the proceedings will be a presentation of the Goddard Trophy to a very special young person in the village, one of our many youngsters to be proud of.

“This is a new venture for the people who have organised the show, and please come and support us and show off the hidden talents we know are out there.”

Programmes with details of classes have been available since early summer, and there are still a few lucky numbered ones, priced 50p, in Dave’s paper shop, Nisa convenience store and The Nip-In opposite the community primary school.

The number of the winning programme will be announced on the day, receiving a prize donated by Barnton locksmith Geoff Ashdown.

People are invited to enter their vegetable patches and allotments in the Growing Spaces competition, and for more information on the show or programmes call Carol on 781461.
