A CHURCH in Northwich will commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War with two events this August.
St Helen’s Church, in Church Road, will be open throughout the day on August 4, the anniversary date, for anyone who wishes to offer a prayer or be in silence to remember those who did not return from war or those who were injured in the conflict.
It will open between noon and 1pm and 7pm until 8pm.
On Sunday, August 17, the Cheshire county branch of the Royal British Legion will hold its annual service of thanksgiving, dedication and remembrance at the church.
As part of the service, which starts at 2pm, there will also be a commemoration of the outbreak of the First World War.
The service, which is open to everyone, is usually held at Chester Cathedral but has been moved to St Helen’s Church as a more central location.
