NORTHWICH Victoria have signed a footballer from Cape Verde to shore up their defence ahead of tomorrow’s Evo-Stik League Premier Division clash with Mickleover Sports.
Pedro Monteiro, who has played in the Premier League, will cover for injury absentees Matthew Brown (groin) and Steve Woods (groin).
“It’s a boost for us,” said Vics boss Andy Preece.
“We’re struggling at the back for bodies so he’s arrived in time to plug the gap that’s been created by players breaking down with injury.”
The 32-year-old started the current campaign at League One club MK Dons following a successful summer trial, but left in September when a short-term deal expired.
He has trained with Shrewsbury Town since then.
Monteiro arrived in England four years ago in a £1m transfer to then Championship side Southampton from Portuguese top-flight club Belenenses.
A switch to West Bromwich Albion for the same fee followed a year later.
He was part of a Championship-winning team at the Hawthorns, making a handful of appearances in English football’s top flight during his second year.
The Portuguese-born stopper, also known as Pele, switched to Falkirk in 2009 where he featured ten times.
He will play initially for Northwich on non-contract terms.
