A CHARITY walk in memory of a young footballer who died during a match is hoping to save more lives.
The annual Whitegate Walk starts at The Plough at 11am on Sunday, September 11, the third anniversary of the death of Whitegate United player Mike Clarke, 29, who died in hospital from an undiagnosed heart condition days after collapsing during a match.
His sister Katie Bridges has raised money to screen youngsters aged 14-35.
The walk is raising funds for St Luke’s Hospice and Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY UK).
Nigel Durose, one of Mike’s former teammates, said: “Mike’s sister has worked tirelessly to raise money for screening programmes with CRY. Of the 100 screened, three have been referred for further investigation, so thanks to this, potentially three lives have been saved.
"Everyone knows the amazing and wonderful work undertaken by St Luke's and everyone will have known someone, be it a relative or friend who has been cared for by the hospice."
Last year, more than 200 walkers took part raising more than £2,500 for local charities.
